After more than three years
in the saddle, apprentice Tan Wei Li finally landed his first career win
when successful on LIGHTNING MAC in the Class 4, Div 1 - 1200m sprint on the
polytrack at Kranji here tonight.
It turned out to be the
biggest surprise of the evening as the American gelding paid $277 for a win.
Tan, 28, spent three years
with trainer Mark Walker in New Zealand and managed only a couple of
placings. Now indentured to Mok Zhan Lun, LIGHTNING MAC (Whywhywhy - Gulley
by Gulch) was his eighth ride in Singapore. "I
only had eight rides so to get this win is very exciting," he said after the
victory.
Another
apprentice Zawari Razali also notched up his first win in Singapore when he
scored on LUCKY FIND (Canny Lad - Judicial Queen by Unbridled's Song) for
his master Brian Dean in the Class 5, Div 2 - 1200m handicap.
"I’ve
been riding in pony clubs in my hometown in Kelantan since I was 10 years
old. I then went to Kuala Lumpur where I became a track rider for Osman
Sidek," said Zawari.
Zawari
then went to New Zealand
where he rode eight
winners when indentured to trainer Dean Wallace. "It’s Mr Wallace who
suggested I come to Singapore. As he knew Mr Brian Dean, he spoke with him
and that’s how I was able to come here." LUCKY FIND was his 10th ride in
Singapore.
