Alex Chew disqualified one year

SINGAPORE:  Sep 6, 2012

Jockey Alex Chew has been disqualified one year after the stewards concluded an inquiry into the running of HEY TORO in a Class 4 - 1100m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji on Jun 17.

The New Zealand gelding, ridden by Chew, finished sixth, two and three-quarter lengths from from the winner THE HUSTLER.

The inquiry was concluded yesterday. After taking evidence from Chew and John O’Hara, the trainer of HEY TORO, Chew was found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. The particulars of the charge are:

1. in that from the 400m to the 300m, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination; and

2. in that over the final 300m, he simulated the use of the whip on a number of occasions and did not make contact with his horse.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the nature of the charge and his record. Chew was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from yesterday to Sep 4, 2013, both dates inclusive. In addition, he was fined a sum of S$50,000. He was advised of his right of appeal.
