Shane starts career with a win

After seeing three of his first four runners finished in the money, new trainer Shane Baertschiger finally marked his first day on the job with a winner when REDDY TO ROCK saluted the judges in the Class 5, Div 2 - 1600m handicap on the polytrack at Kranji here tonight.

The evening began on a frustrating note when Baertschiger's first two runners started favourite in the first two races, then EL MILAGRO was beaten a head in the Class 3 - 1200m sprint before REDDY TO ROCK (Fastnet Rock - Wooly by Red Ransom) tasted victory. It was the maiden success in 11 starts for the four-year-old.

Shane took over his father Don's string when he was granted his trainer's licence early this week after spending 19 years learning the trade from Baertschiger senior for the last 19 years.

Shane was just 20 when he joined his father in Kuala Lumpur. The Baertschigers were in Bukit Timah for a couple of months in 1999 before moving to the new Kranji racecourse.

Shane started out as a syce, promoting to stable supervisor before becoming assistant to his father.
