BOARDWALK EMPIRE, who led
but faded to finish down the field over 1400m last week, sprang a huge
surprise when he scored over 1700m here today.
Apprentice Mohd Yazid, who
rode the gelding when the five-year-old registered his only previous win
last November, was back in the saddle for the first time since and the
partnership again proved to be a winning one.
As a result of his run last
week, BOARDWALK EMPIRE (Rock Of Gibraltar - Lezayre by Keltrice) was never
fancied in the betting and paid RM386 for a win.
BOARDWALK EMPIRE is
pedigree-bred, being by the sire of two-time Cox Plate winner SO YOU THINK
and from a mare who won 10 races and was Group 3-placed. It was then no
surprise BOARDWALK EMPIRE was sold for A$100,000 as a yearling and re-sold
for NZ$150,000 as a two-year-old.
BOARDWALK EMPIRE won two
races and was placed thrice in 13 starts in Australia before finding his way
to Singapore. But he failed to show up in seven starts at Kranji and
subsequently made his way to Malaysia.
In his new environment,
BOARDWALK EMPIRE has now picked up two wins in seven starts, both in Class
4. A far cry from the tracks in Sydney where he registered two wins but
regaining his old dash nevertheless.
