Cheyne conquers Kranji on outsider

South African jockey Greg Cheyne finally conquered Kranji when he booted home CONQUEROR to win the Maiden - 1200m handicap here today.

Not short of support since he began riding in Singapore last Friday, it was Cheyne's 24th ride at Kranji and not the breakthrough that punters had expected, CONQUEROR (Woodbury Lad - Miss Impulsive by Epidaurus) had managed just one second in 18 previous starts.

Ridden for the first time by Cheyne, CONQUEROR showed a clean pair of heels this time to lead throughout and paid S$631 for a win.

"It has taken me a few more rides than I would have liked but now that I have broken hopefully it may be the start of quite a deal more," said Cheyne, who is licensed until Jul 31.
