Globe-trotting French horse
CHINCHON (Marju - Jarama) improved on his fifth placing in the S$3mil
Singapore Airlines International Cup last year to win the 2012 edition of
the Group 1 event at Kranji here tonight.
It was the second win by a
France trained runner in the 2000m event, following GLORIA DE CAMPEAO
success in 2009, and an emotional victory for Spain-born trainer Carlos
Laffon-Parias whose father passed away last Friday.
Laffon-Parias was not at
Kranji tonight when the four-year-old, ridden by Olivier Doleuze, cruised to
a three-length win over Hong Kong's ZAIDAN (Street Cry - Element Of Truth)
but his wife was on hand to receive the winner's trophy on his behalf.
Three-time Singapore Gold
Cup winner EL DPORADO (Stay Gold - White Leap by White Muzzle) finished
third, ahead of the German runner ZAZOU (Shamardal - Zaza Top).
CHINCHON has won three
Group 3 races in his homeland but international success eluded him until he
captured the Group 1 United Nations Stakes (2200m) at Monmouth Park in the
United States in July 2010.
CHINCHON has started only
eight times since and returned to winning form in the Group 3 Prix Exbury
(2000m) before going to Hong Kong and ran eighth in the Audemars Piguet QEII
Cup last month. He won the Prix Exbury in a soft track and was at lease in
the soft going tonight.
"I can’t believe it, I’m
still up in the air. I’ll come down to earth in a day or so. It means an
awful lot to me to win this race in Singapore. I was one of the early ones
to come out of Europe to ride here, which makes this special. I had a good
trip and he improved his position when I asked him, and he finished really
well," said Doleuze who has ridden with success in Singapore previously.
