HS Gill lands first win as senior rider

KUALA LUMPUR:  Sep 2, 2012

Former champion apprentice Harmeet Singh Gill, who was granted a senior jockey's licence this week, celebrated his new status by winning the RM75,000 Shah Alam Trophy astride ONLY THUMBS UP (Exceed And Excel - Palme D'or by Royal Academy) at Sungei Besi here today.

Installed favourite in the Class 4 - 1400m handicap after his last start success, the Australian five-year-old led his rivals on a merry chase, leading throughout to win by three quarters of a length.

ONLY THUMBS UP had 10 starts in Australia, scoring once and was placed thrice, before coming to Malaysia where he has not started four times and very much on the upgrade.

The day's riding honours went to Noel Callow, who had a double on his return to Malaysia last week and followed up with a treble today.
