Singapore-trained HINT, who
finished fifth in the Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup when he ventured up
north to contest the cross-border race last year, enjoyed much better
fortune this time to score a runaway win in the 2200m handicap here today,
the final day of the Malaysian racing season.
Ridden by Jose De Souza who
has been enjoying a lot of success this season finishing second in the
table, the Australian seven-year-old drew away final his rivals in the
closing stages to win by two-and-three-quarter lengths.
Winner of one race in
Australia and successful seven times at Kranji, HINT has not tasted success
since September last year but enjoyed a tremendous "pull" in the handicap
from the top Malaysian horses, particularly the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor
and Coronation Cup winner SPEED BABY who had to carry 59kg.
With just 50.5kg on his
back, HINT covered the distance in 2min 12.5secs, just one-tenth of a second
outside the course record which has stood since 1994 when NOBLE SPIRITS
triumphed in the Gold Cup.
It was another success
cross-border raid for trainer Steven Burridge who won this race with RISKY
BUSINESS in 2010 when it was held in Kuala Lumpur. Last June, Burridge has
SPEED BABY in his yards when the gelding won the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor.
