Santana and Baster off the mark

While Joao Moreira celebrated another good day at the office with four winners, the day also held special significance for new faces Stephen Baster and Ivaldo Santana.

After finishing second twice in four rides in his debut meeting last Friday, Baster landed his first winner at Kranji when he booted home WHITE COFFEE (Lonhro - Busking by Encosta De Lago) to win the Happiness & Prosperity Stakes (Class 3 - 1400m) in his first ride this afternoon. It was two-from-two for the four-year-old who raced five times in Australia for a win, also over 1400m.

Baster, here for a six-month stint, made it a double on SADDLERS CREEK (Scenic - Merriang Road by Persian Heights) in the Spring Festival Handicap (Class 4 - 1700m) on the polytrack, with the right-year-old returning to form after 13 months. It was, however, the gelding's fourth win in 52 starts.

"I can’t complain with the start I’ve had," said Baster. "My aim is to ride for as many trainers as I can and I must say I’m thankful for the ones that have supported me so far."

Santana, the reigning champion jockey at Sao Paulo, was off the mark in his 10th ride in Singapore when he booted home GOLDEN FRIENDS (Don Eduardo - Zipperup by Tights) in the Abundance Handicap (Class 5 - 2000m), ending a run of disappointing runs for the five-year-old who has one previous win.

"I’m very happy to have won my first race here," said Santana who only made his debut last Friday. He is licensed until June 30.
