Champion jockey Joao
Moreira, who missed the whole of December through suspension and an extended
holiday but still set a new record riding of 153 winners last year, returned
to action at Kranji tonight and promptly picked up where he left off with a
double.
The Brazilian, who rode
many winners for the now-retired Douglas Dragon in the last two years,
teamed up with his daughter Leticia to land his first win on the season on
SKY WIPER (Royal Academy - Final Claus by Christmas Tree).
After winning his debut
last April, the Australian gelding was spelled nearly five months before
returning to racing in October. It was his second win in four starts.
Moreira quickly followed up
in the next race to score on PERFECT KID (Beautiful Crown - Lakeside Wedding
by Lake Coniston) for trainer Leslie Khoo who achieved a personal best 66
winners and finished second in the table last year behind Patrick Shaw. It
was Khoo's first winner of the season and the maiden success for the
Australian four-year-old.
