Trainer Michael Freedman
unleashed two promising three-year-olds against older horses in the
S$200,000 Kranji Sprint (1200m) at Kranji here today.
While the focus of
attention was on MASTHEAD, unbeaten in two previous starts in Singapore and
the mount of Craig Williams who flew in specially for the two feature races
today, it was the less fancied MR BIG (Elusive Quality - Basamaat by
Danehill) who came away victorious in the Singapore Group 3 event.
MR BIG, who landed in
Singapore unraced, has been very consistent with six wins and five placings
in 11 starts, winning the Group Aushorse Golden Horseshoe and the Group 3
Juvenile Championship last season.
After a run of three
consecutive placings, MR BIG won in open company on the polytrack last time
out and that set up his best performance to date, leading all the way to win
by one and three-quarter lengths today from the odds-on favourite ATO.
MASTHEAD finished third.
"He’s such a genuine
galloper. He just doesn’t like to get passed by another horse when he gets
in front," said Freedman.
For winning jockey Stephen
Baster, it was his first group win in Singapore.
