It wasn't too long that
MITRE PEAK, who was purchased was for ¥5,250,000 as a yearling, struggled to
win in Class 5.
But since breaking through
for his first win in Maiden company last March, the Japanese gelding has
been growing from strength to strength, picking up three more wins before
going down by a short head to TENZING in the Group 3 Fortune Bowl (2000m) on
Jan 24.
On the strength of that
run, MITRE PEAK (Manhattan Cafe - Haru Jun by Tony Bin) started second
favourite in the S$150,000 Woodlands Classic Stakes (2000m) today.
Ridden by Alan Munro, the
five-year-old came from just off the pace to beat the 10-time winner
GINGERBREAD MAN by a neck.
Trainer Hideyuki Takaoka
described his charge as a late bloomer. "It’s
only when he started to win over a mile in Class 4 company that he showed he
had finally showed his true ability," said the Japanese trainer who won
three Singapore Gold Cups with another Japanese import EL DORADO.
