It's a historic day for the
Penang Turf Club (PNTC) at their 73-year-old Batu Gantong racecourse here
today when they introduced two new distances following extensive repairs to
their main track in 2010.
CITY OF HOPE (Shrewdy - Bella Puella by
Kenvain) bounced back to form after 12 months to become the first 'mile'
winner in Penang when he beat a field of home based Class 5 horses in the
opening race. It was his third win in 40 starts.
QI POWER (Bachelor Duke - Light Rain by Four
Seasons), narrowly beaten into second place last time out, went one better
to score an easy win over 1300m in Restricted Maiden company.
Hitherto, it had not been easy for PNTC to
stage races over these two distances due to the layout of the track. The
number of runners for 1600m has been restricted to just 12 for safety reason
as the horses have to negotiate the turn into the back straight very soon
after the jump-off.
