Jai Shankar, who is chasing
Eirwan Khalid for the jockey's premiership this season, boosted his chances
with a splendid double here today, including the feature event — the
RM75,000 Dato Yeoh Cheang Lee Trophy for Class 3 horses over 1600m.
Despite winning his last
start in Class 4, WIENER (Snitzel - Zsabelle by Zabeel) was unfancied in the
betting in the race held annually in honour of the late chairman of Perak
Turf Club.
As in his last outing, the
Australian gelding came from well off the pace to run down the pacemaker
KAMPONG CHANTEK to pay RM110 for a win. It was his fourth win in 27 starts.
Shankar's next winner was a
popular one. BIG LIGHTNING (All Bar One - Beni Hana by Danzero) started
odds-on after two consecutive placings and romped home by six and a quarter
lengths in the Restricted Maiden - 1100m sprint on the straight course.
Later, Eirwan kept up his
winning run to score on Malaysian bred SERDANG MAN (Dolphin Street - Summer
Rose by Zabaleta) who broke the ice in his 21 start.
Eirwan is nine winners
ahead of Shankar at the top of the table with 43 wins. Both have not come
close to winning the premiership in the past.
