New-kid-on-the-block Sonny
Yeoh, who managed two seconds with 22 runners since taking over from his
elder brother Dr Yeoh Kheng Chye at the beginning of this month, dealt
punters a double shock at Kranji this evening.
Yeoh, 50, who was assistant
to his brother for 28 years, saddled his first winner when newcomer STEPITUP
(Hussonet - Ain't Seen Nothin' by Nothin' Leica Dane) took the Restricted
Maiden - 1000m sprint on the polytrack.
Ridden by Ivaldo Santana,
the Australian gelding upset the first two favourites to pat $421 for a win.
STEPITUP was originally
purchased by Cliff Brown for A$90,000 at the Melbourne Yearling Sale and was
initially trained by Steven Burridge before being transferred to the younger
Yeoh.
"It’s always nice to get
that first win out of the way just to build on the confidence level, though
this one was a bit of a surprise," said Yeoh.
Five races later, Yeoh made
it a truly memorable evening when TENTENWIN (Untouchable - Upper Notch by
High Yield) rebounded after 16 months out in the cold to win the Class 5,
Div 2 - 1100m sprint.
After finishing down the
field in all but one of his previous runs this season, he paid $240 for his
third win in 24 starts.
