MAURICE UTRILLO (Sadler's
Wells - Sabria by Miswaki) ended a long sequence of 21 runs without success
to capture the S$150,000 Causeway Classic Stakes over 1,800m on the
polytrack at Kranji here tonight.
Until May last year, the
one-time winner in Ireland had been pretty useful notching up five wins in a
12-month period.
There have been a few minor
placings since his last success but his last two starts have been
encouraging, including his fifth to CHASE ME in the Chairman's Trophy three
weeks ago.
With a significant drop in
weight, MAURICE UTRILLO managed to run down the favourite DUJARDIN in the
shadows of the winning post to win by a head, aided superbly by Barend
Vorster who has now ridden him in five of his six victories.
The removal of blinkers
three starts back also paid dividends for the Irish gelding who had cost
420,000 guineas as a yearling but managed just one minor win and two
placings in five runs in Ireland before coming out to Singapore.
