Seasoned campaigner
WAIKATO, who has been the best local finisher in the Singapore Airlines
International Cup (SIA Cup) in the past two years, has earned himself
another crack at the Group 1 international next month after winning the
S$500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2000m at Kranji tonight.
The New Zealand gelding
started out as a prolific sprinter, winning 12 times over 1200m and another
five times over 1400m.
In 2009, WAIKATO (Pins -
Skywalker Wilkes by Skywalker) surprised many when he won the Kranji Mile
(1600m), his only group success prior to tonight.
Having never won beyond
1600m then, he sprang another surprise when he home fourth in the SIA Cup
behind LIZARD'S DESIRE in 2010 and he backed it up with a third placing to
GITANO HERNANDO last year after finishing fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II
Cup.
Now a rising nine-year-old,
WAIKATO has finally chalked up first win over 2000m. And despite smashing
the Singapore riding records in the past two years, the Cup was Joao
Moreira's only second group win in Singapore. His previous big win was
astride INTERCEPT in the Patrons' Bowl in 2010.
With the win, WAIKATO
became only the third horse after ROCKET MAN and OUZO to chalk up more than
S$3 million in prizemoney in Singapore.
