WHAT NOW (State City-
Classic Lock by Grosvenor) cemented his reputation as a 1400m specialist
with an impressive win in the S$350,000 EW Barker Trophy at Kranji here
tonight.
The Australian gelding had
raced seven times over the trip previously for five wins and two placings.
A step-up in class and
distance last time out saw WHAT NOW being prominent for most of the way till
the top straight before fading to finish ninth to FLAX in the Group 1
Raffles Cup (1800m).
Realising that the
five-year-old did not quite stay, trainer Cliff Brown brought him back to
his favourite distance in the Group 2 event tonight and renewed partnership
with Joao Moreira who was responsible for his five previous wins.
After travelling
prominently early, WHAT NOW surged to the front after turning for home and
quickly opened up a clear lead before winning by two and a quarter lengths.
It was his sixth win in 15
starts, a splendid return for a horse who was passed in at just A$9,000 at
the yearling sale.
WHAT NOW was the third leg of a treble for Moreira tonight and the
record-breaking jockey is now just five wins shy of the magical 200 mark.
