Red Beard returns to form after a year

A recent change of trainer did the trick as RED BEARD returned to form after 12 months to win the main event, the Kranji Stakes A - 1400m sprint at Kranji here today.

The New Zealand gelding reeled off a hat-trick as a three-year-old in 2011 and won three of four starts leading up to the Emirates Singapore Derby last July.

He finished dead last in the Derby and after four more disappointing outings, was transferred to Shane Baertschiger.

In his first start for his new trainer last month, RED BEARD came from a long way back to finish fourth to MASTHEAD over 1200m in a similar event.

With a switch of jockey Corey Brown today, RED BEARD was always travelling well over the slightly longer trip, racing past the front running KEEP AWAY with some ease in the closing stages to win by one length and a quarter.

"we were expecting him to run good today, especially over a more suitable distance," said Baertschiger. RED BEARD started a firm favourite.

"We’ll just take it easy with him now. The more important today was to see him back on track."
