LORD BROMPTON, who ended
his four-year-old campaign with a creditable sixth to BETTER LIFE in the
Emirates Singapore Derby last July, made a winning start as a five-year-old
when he captured the S$95,000 Racing Guide Classic (Benchmark 83 - 1400m) at
Kranji here tonight.
Jockey Corey Brown rode a
well-judged race on the Australian gelding, bringing him from last early in
the nine-horse field to beat the joint favourite TOM by half-a-length.
It was his third win in
nine starts in Singapore, after finishing on board eight of nine runs in
Australia without winning.
For Brown, he will always a
soft spot for LORD BROMPTON. "He gave me my first win here in Singapore. But
compared to that first win, he was a lot more relaxed tonight as I had to
ride his ears off him the first time."
Trainer Cliff Brown is now
looking forward to the Longines Singapore Gold Cup next month with the
gelding. "He was looking for the mile tonight. I will definitely look at the
Gold Cup now but he will need another run first."
"He was a bit stiff in the
Derby. John Powell said he got held up and he should have finished closer –
maybe third, but probably not beat the winner," said the Australian.
