After struggling to find
success in the early months, CANNON HILL has made great strides in recent
months, culminating in his victory in the Group 3 $150,000 Causeway Classic
Stakes over 1800m at Kranji here tonight.
After notching two wins
since April, CANNON HILL's first attempt in the group races resulted in a
fourth placing to NANDOWRA in the Group 3 Yew Tee Classic Stakes over 1800m
on the turf early last month.
He then stepped out to win
a Benchmark 74 event over 2000m two weeks later and went up a notch tonight
to claim victory in fine style.
Barend Vorster rode a
copy-book race on the Irish gelding, bringing him with a well-timed run in
the home stretch to win drawing away by two and a half lengths.
CANNON HILL began his
racing in Ireland with two second finishes from four runs at two. He had a
further four outings the following season for two wins and a second.
He was then shipped over to
the United States where he finished unplaced in the Group 2 American Derby
at Arlington Park. After a further unplaced start at four, he was shipped to
Singapore to continue his career.
At Kranji, CANNON HILL has
now started 19 times for four wins, a second and three third placings.
The Causeway Classic
Stakes, run as a Group 3 for the first time in its fourth year, has become
one of trainer Patrick Shaw's favourite races after his win with SOUTH
EASTER in 2011 and MAURICE UTRILLO last year.
