Trainer David Kok finally
secured his first group success thanks to a horse he took over just a few
months ago: the aptly-named CASH LUCK.
The former assistant to
Charles Leck took up his licence in 2009 but has no top names horses in his
yards to boast of.
CASH LUCK had won five
races in the past two seasons and was even sent to Dubai where he was
unplaced in two runs last year.
After coming under Kok,
CASH LUCK contested all three legs of the Singapore 4YO Challenge, finishing
fourth in the Stewards' Cup but unplaced in the Patrons' Bowl and Emirates
Singapore Derby.
Kok then made his
breakthrough with the Australian gelding when CASH LUCK won a Kranji Stakes
B event over 1600m last month with Joao Moreira.
With Moreira opting to ride
ZAC SPIRIT in the S$500,000 Panasonic Kranji Mile at Kranji today, the ride
on CASH LUCK went to Danny Beasley.
CASH LUCK overcame an
untidy start to settle second behind MR BIG and raced past the leader with
some ease in the final 100m to win by one length and a quarter, causing an
upset in a very strong field and paid $105 for win.
Kok said afterwards he will
see how CASH LUCK pulls up before deciding if he will run in the Raffles Cup
later this month.
"But he’s definitely
running in the Gold Cup. He ran in it last year and finished seventh to
BETTER LIFE," said Kok.
