Having finished behind
SUPER EASY in two big races in the past two months, SPEEDY CAT gained some
measure of revenge when he captured the S$300,000 Stewards' Cup over 1400m
at Kranji here today.
SPEEDY CAT created an upset
when he won the Merlion Trophy last March but could only finish third in the
Lion City Cup in April and sixth in the Group 1 KrisFlyer International
Sprint (where SUPER EASY was third) last month.
All the above three races
were run over 1200m and SPEEDY CAT clearly appreciated the extra distance
today, having been placed twice over 1600m last year.
Coupled this with a
brilliant ride by Manoel Nunes who bidded for his time on the New Zealand
gelding, SPEEDY CAT came from off the pace early to beat EL MILAGRO and
SUPER EASY in a three-way photo to claim his eighth win in 19 starts.
"He got checked and the
jockey almost fell off, but he got going again," trainer Alvin Tan said of
SPEEDY CAT's run in the KrisFlyer.
"I knew today that the
1400m was a much more suitable trip for him and I believe that he will have
no problems with the 1600m," said jockey Manoel Nunes.
The Stewards' Cup is the
first leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge. The second leg, Patrons'
Bowl, will be run over 1600m on Jun 30 with the final leg, the Emirates
Singapore Derby, staged over 2000m on Jul 14.
