CAVALLO accounted for some
smart opposition to cause a big upset in the main event, the Kranji Stakes A
- 1200m sprint, at Kranji here tonight.
It was the gelding's second
win three starts under Sam Chua, having previously won three from 11 for
trainer Michael Freedman.
Costing NZ$130,000 as a
yearling, CAVALLO found one to beat thrice this year and was unplaced in the
first leg of the Singapore 3YO Series.
He found himself tally
outclassed again in the Group 3 Jumbo Jet Trophy last time out but bounced
back in style tonight, partnered again by John Sundradas.
John rode an inspired race
on CAVALLO, bringing him from the rear of the field to win by half a length
from DAVIDE, winner of the Group 3 Woodlands Handicap last month.
CAVALLO was the second
least-backed in the seven-horse field and paid S$160 for a win.
"To be honest, there was
not much stable confidence in him tonight, but I think the light weight
helped him a lot,” said Chua. “He’s actually better on polytrack as well,
but I think a bit of give in the ground suited him tonight."
It was his first success on
the turf.
