Singapore based jockey Greg
Cheyne, who has fallen in love with the Sungei Besi track this season, has
taken a huge step to winning the
International Jockeys Challenge (IJC) at Sungei Besi this year.
The South African has made
several appearances on this track this year winning 11 races prior to this
meeting. And he made his knowledge of the track count by winning one of the
three IJC races contested today and was placed second in the other two.
Cheyne took the opening
challenge race when successful on CONFRERE in the RM75,000 Kenilworth Cup
for Class 3 horses over 1200m.
Another Singapore based
jockey Stephen Baster took the second event, the Royal Sabah Turf Club
Trophy (Class 4 - 1600m), on IWA ANTILIA, beating LADY DIAMOND, ridden by
Cheyne, by a head on a thrilling finish.
Former New Zealand champion
jockey Lisa Allpress took the third event, the Korea Racing Authority Trophy
(Class 3 - 1600m), on JOYFUL.
It was a win 12 years in
the making. She failed to win a race when she last rode in Malaysia under
hew maiden name Mumby in 2001, managing five placings in 32 rides.
Cheyne, who has a second
winner in the final event today, goes into the second day action leading
with 26 points. Baster and Allpress have 12 points each.
Three more Challenge races
will be staged tomorrow.
