Former Perth trainer Shane
Edwards, who has been training with a disqualification hanging over his head
the last few months, had plenty of reason to smile here today when he won
four races, including the RM500,000 Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup.
After providing Jai Shankar
with three consecutive winners to enable him win the jockey's championship,
Edwards then saw his fast-finishing galloper MONSILI to win the Gold Cup
which is run over 2000m this year after being staged over 2200m since 1984.
MONSILI, who won a race for
Edwards in Australia before both horse and trained came to Malaysia, gave
Edwards a winning start in Malaysia when he won his local debut last
February.
But the Australian gelding
only blossomed since mid-November by reeling off four consecutive wins,
culminating with his victory today.
Ridden by Harmeet Singh
Gill, was kept well off the pace early but charged home to beat the gusty
Malaysian bred BEAUTIFUL CHOICE by three quarters of a length.
Edwards' other runner,
MONEY MACHINE, finished third after setting the pace.
It's the second big win for
Edwards after his success with REBEL FURY in the Tunku Gold Cup last
February and the trainer's best ever day in Malaysia.
