ENCOSTA DIABLO, a
NZ$600,000 yearling purchase who was a black type winner in New Zealand,
finally made the breakthrough in Singapore when he triumphed in the
Benchmark 67 - 1600m handicap at Kranji here tonight.
Ridden for the first time
in 10 starts by Manoel Munes, the five-year-old settled off the pace early
but came through in the home stretch to win drawing away by one length.
The win was trainer Mark
Walker's 33rd win of the season and he maintained a five-win cushion over
Laurie Laxon at the top of the table.
ENCOSTA DIABLO was a
promising juvenile in New Zealand with two wins and a second in three starts
including the listed Welcome Stakes (1000m) at Riccarton.
Turning three, he raced
eight times and picked up two more wins but was unplaced in the Group 1 NZ
2000 Guineas and Group 1 New Zealand Derby.
"He had a lot of feet
trouble. That was why his form was bad," said Walker of his charge. "The
farriers here have done a magic job with him. Without their expertise, it’s
unlikely he would have even raced."
