Calvin Goon suspended three months

KUALA LUMPUR:  May 29, 2013

Jockey Calvin Goon was today suspended three months for his ride on SUPER AMIGO in a Class 5 - 1400m sprint for home based horses here on May 18.

SUPER AMIGO, trained by Tan Soo Beng, set the pace and faded to finish fifth to UPTHEANTE.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into Goon’s ride on SUPER AMIGO in the above race today. Evidence was taken from Goon and Tan, the rider and trainer of SUPER AMIGO respectively.

Goon was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that the Stewards were not satisfied that he made reasonable effort to restrain SUPER AMIGO and thereafter attempt to carry out his instructions which were midfield, in the early stages of the race mainly the first 200m of the race.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Goon’s points of mitigation and previous good record. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of Goon’s suspension. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of three months with effect from Jun 2 to Sep 1, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
