The new season has started
on a bright note for Jimmy Kek Lai Quan after the apprentice landed his
first winner on TRAVERTINE in the final event on the opening day of the 2013
season today.
The Australian
five-year-old was returning to form after a run of "outs" and Kek
confidently steered the gelding to an all-the-way victory for his fourth win
in 21 starts.
Kek, 28, is a graduate of Singapore's STAR programme.
After beginning his apprenticeship with Hill, Kek was sent to New Zealand
for more experience under the guidance of Jason Bridgman.
He returned after having just one ride down under and was
having his 30th start in Singapore when he saluted the judge today.
The win was also a splendid start in the new season for
Newbury Racing Stable who won the owner's title for the first time last
year.
There were also winning starts for champion trainer
Laurie Laxon who saddled PROFOUND to victory in the race named in his honour
and champion apprentice Tengku Rehaizat who scored on CHEETAH ON FIRE.
Record-breaking jockey Joao Moreira is still on a
well-deserved break back in Brazil.
