Lizarre gives Shaw a flying start to 2013

Patrick Shaw, dethroned as the champion trainer last year after winning the title for the first time in 2011, has started the new season with a 'bang'.

After taking the first three races on the opening day of the 2013 racing season today, the South African went on to capture the first group race of the year, the Group 3 New Year Cup, with LIZARRE.

Winner of three races in South Africa, LIZARRE had a promising start to his Singapore campaign in 2011 with two wins, including the Mandai Classic Stakes, and three placings in as many starts, even finishing second to EL DORADO in the Singapore Gold Cup.

The gelding managed just one placing, at the start of the season, in seven runs last year but has been showing encouraging sign in his recent outings.

Ridden for the first time by Davy Bonilla today, LIZARRE came with a well-timed run to win drawing away by one-and-a-half lengths. It was the Frenchman's first feature win at Kranji since he began riding in Singapore last November.
