NANDOWRA returned to his
best form to capture the Group 3 S$200,000 Polytrack Championship Mile over
1600m at Kranji here tonight.
It was a deserving win for
last season's Group 3 Moonbeam Vase winner who after winning the 1800m event
last year, has featured in the finishes of several group races without
winning including a second to ATO in the Group 1 Patrons' Bowl.
Last time out, NANDOWRA was
installed favourite in the Group 3 Fortune Bowl (2000m) but could managed
only fourth to MARTIN.
With a switch of rider to
Manoel Munes tonight, the New Zealand five-year-old dictated the terms from
the start in the six-horse field and fought back gallantly when headed
momentarily in the closing stages to beat BLACK ICE by a nose.
The topweight and odds-on
favourite FLYING FULTON was a disappointing fourth.
Trainer Michael Freedman
told Munes "not to be afraid to be positive from his outside gate" and
that's what the Brazilian jockey did, taking NANDOWRA straight to the front
on settling down.
"He’s a good genuine stayer
and has always been thereabouts in his races as he’s such a fighter," said
Freedman.
NANDOWRA has now chalked up
eight win in 24 starts in Singapore but for Munes, it was his first group
win since relocating from Macau at the start of the year.
