It was a historic moment in
local racing when Manoel Nunes booted home HOFBURG PALACE to win the
Initiation - 1200m sprint to record his 100th win in Singapore.
Never before has two
jockeys hit triple figures in a single season.
Joao Moreita, who left for
Hong Kong last month after riding 179 winners this year, was the trailblazer
with 116 wins in 2010, 153 wins in 2011 and 206 wins last year.
Nunes, who relocated from
Macau early in the season, has been quick to showcase his championship
qualities after winning five titles in Macau.
Apart from his native
Brazil and Macau, Nunes has also ridden in Mauritius, Dubai and South Korea.
"I’ve ridden in a lot of
different places around the world, but I have always wanted to come to
Singapore," said Nunes. "So to get my 100th winner here is such a great
feeling."
HOFBURG PALACE, a
NZ$145,000 purchase as a yearling, ended a run of five consecutive placings
to notch his first win.
He was the middle leg of a
treble for Nunes.
