Jockey Parma Sivan Veerapan (V Sivan) was on Wednesday handed a 18-month disqualification and fined S$50,000 for his ride on JERAM CLIPPER at Kranji on Mar 17. Trained by Cliff Brown, the Australian gelding finished fourth in a blanket finish in a Class 4, Div 1 - 1200m sprint on the polytrack, beaten nose-nose-short head. The inquiry into the run of JERAM CLIPPER was concluded on Wednesday. After taking evidence from Sivan and Brown, Sivan was found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. The particulars of the charge is that from the 450m until the concluding stages, he failed to ride his mount with sufficient vigour and determination when it was reasonable and permissible to do so. When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the nature of the charge and his record. Sivan was disqualified for a period of eighteen months with immediate effect from yesterday to Oct 16, 2014, both dates inclusive, and in addition, he was fined a sum of S$50,000. He was advised of his right of appeal. Sivan subsequently exercised his right of appeal against the decision of the panel of stewards and the penalty imposed on him. He subsequently applied for a stay of sentence. After hearing and considering submissions from Sivan today, his application for a stay of sentence was denied by the panel of stewards. The appeal will be heard at a date to be fixed. |
