De Souza gets one month on
appeal IPOH: Oct 19, 2013 |
|
Jose De Souza's dream of winning the jockey's title this season has ended with him being suspended for one month from Monday. The Brazilian, who finished second behind Eirwan Khalid (51 to 59 winners) last year, was earlier handed a two-month suspension and a RM2,000 fine for reckless riding on LUCK DRAGON in Ipoh on Sep 8. The Perak Turf Club Racing Stewards heard his appeal here yesterday. After considering submissions from De Souza, his witness App I Amirul and the Chief Stipendiary Steward Scott Matthews, the Racing Stewards upheld the conviction and the penalty was reduced to a one-month suspension and the fine of RM2,000 remains. Acting on the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of De Souza’s suspension to take effect from Monday to expire Dec 24, both dates inclusive. De Souza’s deposit was forfeited. De Souza trails Azhar Ismail by seven winners (36 to 43). After this weekend's races, De Souza will only resume riding on the final weekend of the season on Dec 28 and 29 in Penang. His current second placing is under threat as Jai Shankar has also ridden 36 winners and Noel Callow is fourth in the table with 33 wins. |
