Whether STEPITUP can rise
to the heights achieved by BETTER THAN EVER, GINGERBREAD MAN and SUPER EASY
remains to be seen.
But for the now, the diminutive galloper has emulated them in making a clean
sweep of the Singapore Three Year Old series after his superb win in the
S$500,000 Singapore Guineas over 1600m at Kranji here tonight.
Following his success in the Group 3 Three
Year Old Sprint (1200m) and Group 2 Three Year Old Classic (1400m), STEPITUP
proved to be a class above the rest again.
In the Three Year Old Classic, SUPER
NINETYSEVEN was distinctly unlucky in the running when he charged home to
finish second. As a result, he was sent out the odds-on favourite in the
Group 1 race tonight, ahead of STEPITUP in the betting.
But once again, STEPITUP lived up to his name
and beat SUPER NINETYNINE to the prize a second time, and collected a bonus
of S$150,000 for Tivic Stable.
It is the first Group 1 win for trainer Sonny
Yeoh who took over from his elder brother Dr Yeoh Kheng Chye last September.
"It’s nice to win a Group 1 race and so early
in my career,” said Yeoh. “Training carries on the family tradition."
Yeoh is also the brother-in-law of now retired
trainer Teh Choon Beng, who won the MRA trainer's premiership a record 13
times.
