TROPAIOS justified his huge
price tag when he triumphed in the S$1.35mil Longines Singapore Gold Cup
over 2200m at Kranji here today.
The English gelding was
sold for €200,000 at the end of his three-year-old campaign in France during
which he won four races including the listed Prix Millkom and was placed
twice in nine starts.
Imported to Singapore with
the big races in mind, TROPAIOS broke through for his maiden win at Kranji
last June and a month later finished third to BETTER LIFE in the Emirates
Singapore Derby.
Since then he has been
placed in three other starts and got into the handicap race today as one of
the bottom weights.
The call was then made to
promising Australian jockey Tommy Berry who at the tender age of 22 has
already ridden six Group 1 winners including the Golden Slipper and Epsom
Handicap in Sydney and the Audemars Piguet QE II Cup (on MILITARY ATTACK) in
Hong Kong earlier this year.
Berry had TROPAIOS at the
rear of the 14-horse field right up to the top of the straight and the
gelding slowly picked up ground when switched to the outside of the field in
the home stretch.
It was only in the final
100m that he was seen with a chance and got up in the nick of time to win by
half a length with little separating the next three horses.
The win represented the
most important win for trainer Michael Freedman in his five-and-a-half years
in Singapore. "I’ve been involved in some big wins back home, but this is my
biggest thrill in racing," said Freedman.
