South African jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe heads a list of four visiting jockeys who will ride at Kranji for varying periods this month. Fayd’Herbe, 32, first came to Singapore in 2011 on a flying visit to ride the Mike de Kock-trained RIVER JETEZ in the Singapore Airlines International Cup and the South African mare finished a creditable second behind GITANO HERNANDO. With his 13 years of riding experience and more than 1,000 winners under the belt, the heavyweight jockey reached the pinnacle of his career in the 2008 Durban July aboard his favourite horse POCKET POWER, albeit he had to share the spoils with DANCER’S DAUGHTER ridden by Kevin Shea. Internationally, he earned acclaim for his win aboard South African champion sprinter J J THE JET PLANE in the Group 2 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai in 2011, while back home, his notable victories include two J&B Met Stakes with POCKET POWER in 2008 and 2009, two Mercury Sprints (AUGUST RUSH in 2011 and WHAT A WINTER in 2012), the 2009 Daily News 2000 (BIG CITY LIFE) and the 2012 South African Fillies Sprint (EBONY FLYER). Fayd’Herbe, whose permit is valid from Oct 1 to 31, goes to scale at 56.5kgs. Two Malaysian based jockeys, Jose De Souza and Mark Gallagher, will also make guest appearances. De Souza’s permit is valid for the cross-border racing days of Oct 4, 6, 25 and 27. He rode at the Panasonic Kranji Mile meeting last year, notching one win aboard JOYFUL MELODY. Currently licensed by the Selangor Turf Club, the 33-year-old has been riding for 15 years during which time he rode more than 400 winners. He was runner-up to Eirwan Khalid in the Malaysian premiership last year with 51 winners while he currently sits third on this year’s table with 30 winners. In Malaysia, de Souza has captured two feature races, namely the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor aboard TOP SPIN in 2010 and the Penang Gold Cup astride the Michael Freedman-trained HINT last year. He goes to scale at 53kgs. Former Singapore-based jockey Gallagher has been granted a one-day visiting jockey’s licence to ride this Sunday. Based in Kuala Lumpur since last year, the 44 year-old Irish rider has been booked by trainer Barry Brogan to ride MULTITASKING in a cross-border race at Kranji on that day. With more than 25 years of experience in the saddle, Gallagher has ridden in excess of 1,000 winners in various countries including Ireland, England, France, America, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau. He rode on the Singapore circuit between 2007 and 2010, chalking up 99 winners at Kranji before relocating to India for two years, followed by his latest port of call, Malaysia. Gallagher has ridden 14 winners in Malaysia thus far this season. There will be a new face at Kranji in the next two weeks with the arrival of South Australian apprentice jockey Krystal Bishop. She was granted a two-week visiting jockey’s licence from Sep 30 to Oct 13. The licensing is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Singapore Turf Club and Thoroughbred Racing South Australia in organising the placement of the Duxes of their Apprentice School during short stints at Kranji. Previous leading South Australian apprentices to have benefitted from that scheme are Amy Herrmann, Libby Hopwood and Jordan Frew. Bishop, 21, has ridden in excess of 90 winners comprising 18 scored at metropolitan tracks. She has taken part in several apprentice series, including two at domestic level in South Australia as well as three at national level in Launceston, Doomben and Alice Springs. Bishop, who goes to scale at 54 kgs, will be indentured to Kranji trainer Shane Baertschiger while in Singapore. ![]() |
