It has not taken long for
Macau apprentice Wong Chon Fong to land his first winner in Malaysia and
what a shock it came to punters.
After managing a second
from four rides last week, Wong rode the race of his life to land HUNTER by
a nose from RENDEZVOUS in the opening race here today.
HUNTER has finished down
the course in 22 starts since recording his only previous win on this course
and distance in February last year and not surprisingly he was neglected in
the betting and paid RM1,152 for a win.
But one person who wasn't
that surprise of the win was trainer Luke Danis. "He just didn't seem to be
interested in racing any more and instead of working on the training track,
I sent him to jump over hurdles last week.
"He really enjoyed the time
jumping around and he seemed more focus on the track this week," said Danis.
Wong was a budding
apprentice who won 57 races in Macau. He wanted to broaden his horizon and
spent the last three months in New Zealand, riding mainly track work.
With rides hard to come by
down-under, Danis invited Wong to come to Penang and the lad hopes to stay
as long as possible here.
