Apprentice Yap suspended 10 race days

PENANG:  Feb 6, 2013

High riding apprentice Yap Kin Yin, who won the apprentice jockjey’s title with 27 wins last year and has already ridden six winners this season, has been suspended a total of 10 race days for careless riding after the stewards concluded inquiries into his ride on three horses here last Sunday.

Firstly, Yap, in the presence of his master, trainer Wee Mung Hua, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that near the 700m, he allowed his mount MOONLITE SHOWER to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of NORTHERN LION (Alan Ng) thereby taking that gelding in onto CIZEN WORLD (M Helmy), thereby causing that gelding to check and lose ground in the combined Classes 1 & 2 - 1200m sprint.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Yap’s guilty plea and his riding record. Yap’s licence to ride in races was suspended for three race days. Acting under the provisions of MRA Rule 48(5), the Stewards deferred the commencement of Yap’s suspension to take effect from next Wednesday, Feb 13 and to Feb 17, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.

Next, Yap also pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that near the 250m, he allowed his mount SNOW FLAME to shift inwards whilst riding along when insufficiently clear of YOUNG GUN (HS Gill) thereby taking that gelding in onto GOOD POWER (J Shankar), resulting in YOUNG GUN to check and lose ground, and GOOD POWER to be hampered in the Class 3 - 1300m handicap.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards also took into consideration Yap’s guilty plea, his forthright evidence and riding record. Yap’s licence to ride in races was suspended for three race days with effect from Feb 18 and to Feb 24, both dates inclusive, to be served consecutively to his suspension which expires on Feb 17. He was also advised of his right of appeal.

Yap also was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that near the 1200m, he allowed his mount BIG RED to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of BERCHAM (WK Yan) thereby taking that gelding in onto FIRE GENERAL (M Leong), thereby causing that gelding to check and lose ground in a Class 4 - 1400m sprint.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards again took into consideration Yap’s riding record. Yap’s licence to ride in races was suspended for four race days with effect from Feb 25 to Mar 8, both dates inclusive, to be served consecutively to his suspension which expires on Feb 24. In addition, the Stewards fined Yap the sum of RM2,000. He was also advised of his right of appeal.

The stewards also inquired into an incident where AL’S KNIGHT (R Woodworth) checked near the 1250m. After viewing the films and hearing the evidence from Yap, the rider of SNOW FLAME, and his master Wee, the Stewards warned Yap to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
