Jockey Cheng suspended four months

Jockey Cheng Ke Ten was today suspended four months for his ride on SUBURBAN SECRET in a Class 5 - 1200m handicap here yesterday.

SUBURBAN SECRET, trained by Shane Edwards, finished eighth of 12 runners to POWER OF TEN.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the riding of SUBURBAN SECRET in the above race at the Selangor Turf Club today and evidence was taken from Cheng, the rider of SUBURBAN SECRET.

Cheng was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

1. The Stewards were not satisfied that he gave sufficient rein on jumping with the field;

2. Shortly after the start, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour to carry out his instructions which were to be handy or midfield;

3. From the 800m to the 600m, the Stewards were not satisfied when he did not attempt to improve to the outside of Q NINE STAR (I Azhar); and

4. The Stewards were not satisfied that on entering the straight, he came to the outside where he was held up behind VISTA (J Low) and LEE’S MELODY (S Salee) when there was a clear run to the inside.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey Cheng’s points of mitigation and his record. Cheng was suspended from riding in races for a period of four months with effect from tomorrow to Feb 12, both days inclusive. He was fined RM30,000 and advised of his right of appeal.
