City Lad too smart in Yew Yee Classic Stakes

Twice last year, CITY LAD came close to winning a Singapore Group 1 event in the Patrons' Bowl and Kranji Mile.

And after enduring 18 months without success, the Elusive City gelding finally returned to the winning enclosure, and earned his first group win in the Group 3 S$150,000 Yew Tee Classic Stakes over 1800m at Kranji here tonight.

Despite his lack of recent success, CITY LAD was backed down to $6 on the win tote against six rivals.

With leading jockey Manoel Nunes on board, CITY LAD stayed just off the pace early before throwing out his challenge and proved too good for his rivals, winning drawing away by three and a quarter lengths.

It was the sixth win in 37 starts for CITY LAD and his first beyond 1600m. "If I could get him to relax, I was always confident he would see out the trip," said Nunes who ended the evening winning six of the nine races on the card.
