JOE CZARINA rose rapidly
through the ranks to record his first major win in the Sultan Gold Vase in Ipoh
last year.
Today, the Australian
seven-year-old cemented his reputation with another gutsy display in the
RM500,000 Swettenham Stud Sprint Trophy (1400m) at his home base Penang.
Ridden by jockey Yan Weng
Kuan, JOE CZARINA was well back in the early running, then had to look for a
run on the inside of horses making the turn into the straight.
The promising BALOTELLI,
meanwhile, disputed the early lead and was well clear at the top of the
straight. But he drifted out under pressure and JOE CZARINA made his
challenge on his inside at the 200m and went on to win by three-quarter of a
length with BALOTELLI fighting back close home to hold on to second placing.
GOOD BABY, who won this
race last year, finished strongly on the rails to claim third placing in a
capacity field of 16 runners.
It was the 10th win in 37
starts for JOE CZARINA who was bought for A$85,000 by the Penang Turf Club
at the Horses In Training Sale.
For jockey Yan, it was his
biggest ever win.
