Malaysian based Jose De
Souza won two of the three challenge races today to emerge champion in
this year's International Jockeys Challenge
held at Sungei Besi this weekend.
The Brazilian jockey showed
just why he is leading the table in Malaysia currently with gem of a ride on
LONE STAAR in the Macau Jockey Club Trophy.
He packed the four-year-old
well off the pace early, then timed his run to perfection in the home
stretch to win drawing away by two lengths.
With CALIFORNIA CAT, De
Souza adopted catch-me-if-you-can tactic and the pair led throughout to win
by one and a half lengths in the Korea Racing Authority Trophy.
De Souza finished the
five-race series ahead of Craig Newitt who had a win in the challenge races
yesterday.
Italian jockey Pierantonio Convertino
won the fifth challenge race astride GOLDHILL PRINCESS in the Australasian
Bloodstock Agency & HS Farm Stay Trophy.
With two second-place
finishes, Noel Callow, the champion of this competition in 2011 and 2012,
finished third. Last year's winner was Greg Cheyne.
De Souza received a cash
prize of RM20,000 while Newitt received RM5,000 and Callow RM2,000. They
were also presented with a trophy each.
