De Souza crowns champion jockey

PENANG:  Dec 28, 2014

For the first time in the history of racing in the MRA racing circuit, Brazilian jockeys have won both the titles in Malaysia and Singapore.

Two weeks after Maonel Nunes was crowned the champion jockey in Singapore after the 2014 season ended at Kranji, De Souza lifted the title for the first time in Malaysia.

Nunes finished second to Joao Moreira (179 winners) in his maiden season in Singapore with 112 winners last year and easily won the 2014 title with 108 winners, 25 more than his nearest rival Danny Beasley.

De Souza has been riding in Malaysia since 2010 and was the runner-up in 2012 and third in the table last year.

This season, De Souza set a new riding record of 75 winners, ended the season on a winning note with FASTNET STAR in the final day of racing here this afternoon.

Richard Lines won the trainer's championship for the fourth consecutive year with 60 winners, well below his personal best of 74 wins in 2013.

He also has the honour of winning the final race of the season with KINGSHIP ADMIRAL.

Tham Kin Chong won his first apprentice title with 26 winners, finishing sixth on the table.

From next year, the MRA will cease to present the annual Awards, meaning there will be no official title for the top owner, trainer, jockey and apprentice.

Jockey's licences will be issued by the respective clubs and it has already caused controversy.

The 2013 champion jockey Jai Shankar, who finished second this year, has not been issued a licence by the Selangor Turf Club for the 2014 season.

On the other hand, the club has issued 12-month licences to South African Grey Cheyne and De Souza, and a six-month licence to another Brazilian Eleandro Lopes.
