Jose De Souza, who has all
but wrapped up the Malaysia jockey's title this year, took the championship
to a new heights when he booted home WATERFALL to victory in a Class 4 -
1100m sprint at Sungei Besi here today.
WATERFALL, who started
favourite, made all the running to win by three and three-quarter lengths
for the gelding's fourth win in 39 starts.
It was De Souza's 70th win
of the season and the Brazilian is 24 winners ahead of second-placed Jai
Shankar with just seven racedays to the end of the season.
It also breaks the riding
record in Malaysia post-1999 when racing in Malaysia and Singapore went
separate ways. The previous best was set by Martin Wepner in 2006 when
the South African rode 69 winners.
De Souza first came to
Malaysia in 2010 and rode 22 winners that season, and the following year he
finished fourth in the table with 33 winners.
De Souza was poised to win
the premiership in 2012 but an injury at a crucial time robbed him of the
chance and he eventually finished second to Eirwan Khalid (59 winners) with
51 winners.
Last year, De Souza
finished third in the table with 37 winners.
