DUJARDIN put behind a
disappointing 2013 during which he was unplaced in all seven starts to start
the new season with a 'bang', winning the Group 3 S$200,000 New Year Cup
over 1900m on the polytrack at Kranji here today.
Perhaps giving an
indication of things of come, winning trainer Laurie Laxon went on to
complete a double with GOODMAN, a good start to the defence of his title
which he has claimed for the past two seasons.
"I’m looking forward to
another year,” said Laxon who has now eight Singapore titles under his belt.
“I’ve got quite a few young good horses."
DUJARDIN was the third leg
of a splendid treble for jockey Manoel Nunes who was a distant second (with
112 winners) to champion Joao Moreira (179) in his maiden Singapore season
last year but well clear of the rest.
Munes was first past the
post on FISCAL WINGS in the opening race of the day but his mount was
relegated to second after a protest by Lisa Allpress on GRAND VITESS.
Nunes then made no mistake
with LUCKY MISSION in the very next event. "They couldn’t take that one off
me,” said Nunes after the race. “It’s good to officially get that first
winner out of the way.
The Brazilian went on to
score on I LIKE before taking the Cup.
DUJARDIN, a two-time winner
in New Zealand, has a promising start to his Singapore campaign when he he
won three races in 2012 and at the tailend of the year was third to FLYING
FULTON in the Group 3 Colonial Chief Stakes over 1700m.
