DUJARDIN, who put behind a
disappointing 2013 to win the New Year Cup on Jan 1, made it a Group 3
double when he carved out a gutsy win in the S$150,000 Woodlands Classic
Stakes over 2000m at Kranji here tonight.
Ridden by Manoel Nunes who
also had the ride in the New Year Cup (1900m) which was run on the polytrack,
the New Zealand gelding showed that he is equally at ease on either
surfaces.
The six-year-old was well
back in the running in the seven-horse contest but was not seen as a winner
till late in the race, charging home to beat LORD BROMPTON to win by a neck
in a very close finish in which only three lengths separated the field.
The favourite MARTIN
finished last after being denied a run and had nowhere to go in the bunch-up
field.
"Honestly, I thought he
would face a tougher task with 57kg compared to 51.5kg at his last win,"
said Nunes.
"Honestly, I thought the
track would have suited MARTIN tonight, but he got jammed up," said winning
trainer Laurie Laxon. "Danny said he should have finished second."
DUJARDIN, a two-time winner
in New Zealand, had a promising start to his Singapore campaign when he he
won three races in 2012 and at the tailend of the year was third to FLYING
FULTON in the Group 3 Colonial Chief Stakes over 1700m.
He failed to show up in all
his seven starts last year but is truly back to his best.
