After chalking up three consecutive placings last year, the career FANTASTIC NEWS suffered a severe setback when he bled at his last start in October.

But the Australian gelding by little known sire PUBLISHING bounced back in a tremendous fashion when he scored first-up from a spell in the Initiation - 1200m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here tonight.

Ridden for the first time by apprentice Chan Wei Sheng, FANTASTIC NEWS was caught three-wide as he vied for the lead with the favourite LUCIUS VORENUS and newcomer BRAD, with the three leaders in a line until the 600m when FANTASTIC NEWS and LUCIUS VORENUS pulled away.

FANTASTIC NEWS mastered LUCIUS VORENUS after a tussle all the way in the home stretch and just as he went clear in the closing stages, CONSTANCE'S SPIRIT, who missed the jump badly, flashed home but the leader held on to win by a nose.

It was only Chan's second success in the saddle following his breakthrough win on GYPSY MAGIC three weeks ago.
