Five years ago, MEXICAN
ROSE (Volksraad - Down View by Gone West), winner of two of her three starts
in New Zealand, won her Singapore debut and went on to chalk up seven more
wins from 11 starts including the Juvenile Championship, Merlion Trophy and
Kranji Sprint.
Now her daughter, her very
first foal MEXICAN GAL has taken the first step in emulating the great mare
and she is showing that she has what it takes to achieve that.
Making her racing debut,
MEXICAN GAL settled nicely behind the front-running favourite,
three-year-old LADY ROULETTE and had no difficulty taking over in the home
stretch to win drawing away by one and a half lengths.
With her impressive debut,
trainer Laurie Laxon will now enter her for the Juvenile Championship in 14
days' time. "She might as well. You only get one shot at it after all," said
the kiwi handler.
"She jumped well and her
gate speed was good but she was a bit keen early on and I had to ease her up
a bit and get her to settle down," said apprentice Kassim A'Isisuhairi. "She
looked a bit lost at the 300m but once I got her balanced she ran on nicely
and I’m sure she’ll win more races in the future."
