Wild Geese races to victory in QE II Cup

Second in the Derby and Raffles Cup last year, and playing second fiddle again in the Group 3 Marsiling Classic Stakes last month, WILD GEESE deservingly scored his first group win in the S$500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kranji here today.

Placed four times in nine starts in two seasons in Ireland, the English gelding was bought for 34,000 euros and was an immediate hit in Singapore, winning his first two outings in May last year.

After his two big runs in the two Group 1 races, he picked up two more wins earlier this year and a group win was also going to come this talented stayer.

Ridden by champion apprentice A'Isisuhairi Kassim, WILD GEESE found himself in front on settling down and was happy to bowl along and then fought off all challengers to win by half a length from joint favourite JOHNNY GUITAR in the Group 2 contest, the final test for local horses before next month's Singapore Airlines International Cup.

The other joint favourite TROPAIOS, winner of the Gold Cup last November, was never in the hunt.

A'Isisuhairi's win on WILD GEESE makes it a double celebration for Kelantan apprentices as Zuriman Zulkifli had earlier in the day won the Group 3 Admiralty Classic Stakes (1600m) on KNIGHT'S COMMAND.
